I chose a word for focus on in my life this year, and it is breathe. It's about doing less to accomplish more, pausing, adding more yoga, and taking a deep breath and letting go.
I decided to make myself a simple stamped bracelet as a reminder. The first letter provided a chance to breathe. The A in the middle is very imperfect, and I wanted to start over immediately, but I took a breath and left it as is. It will serve as a reminder that waiting until things are perfect means some things are never done at all.
I've really enjoyed reading other blogs this week with their reflections and resolutions, and I realized that I'd like to record some goals for 2014 here. These are random, and not intended to be strict, but provide a little focus to what I enjoy so much- making things!
1- Use What I Have
Because I buy a lot of fabric second hand, I feel the need to pick up good fabric when I see it. It's not the same as going to a fabric store and it having a big selection. Sewing this way means now I have a lot of (random!) fabric and I want to try to "shop my stash" as much as possible.
This works for patterns too. I have at least 5 patterns for me purchased last year that I haven't used yet at all, and these are just the recent purchases. The number of children's patterns is more than I care to count!
The same goal goes for my other crafts. I have so much yarn, so many beads, so much paper. I'd like to start with what I have. After all, I have a whole craft room filled with supplies!
2- Improve My Sewing Skills
I want my clothes to look nicer, on the inside and outside. This may seem at odds with the idea of embracing imperfection, but taking a deep breath and slowing down to do good work is something I want to work on.
I took many sewing classes in high school, and learned how to do everything from sleeve plackets to blind hems, but it's been a long time! I tend to shy away from technical sewing, but I'm ready for the challenge- I think! This is where slowing down to accomplish more comes in.
3- Post on the Blog More
I have really enjoyed sharing my makes on this little blog! I know not many people read it, but I still feel like I'm talking to people who get me. I also like the record of what I've made. Not everything has made it to the blog, but I can see how much I've done and how far I've come and I love it!
What generally slows me down is photos. I blog from my phone, and I haven't come up with a great way to use photos from my DSLR yet. That kept me from blogging at all for a long time, but I decided to be ok with iPhone pics for now. Also with it being winter, it's not light before I go to work or after I get back home! The days are getting longer now so photo taking should improve.
So there it is! I'm trying to make these goals open-ended and easy. Making is a big part of my life and something I enjoy immensely. Too many rules will make it feel like work! I'm looking forward to checking in on this at the end of the year to see if I met any of these goals, none of them, or forgot about it completely!
If nothing else, hopefully I will remember to just breathe.
