I really want to participate in Selfish Sewing Week this week, but I do most of my sewing on the weekends- being an elementary school teacher and a mom doesn't leave a lot of energy left over in the evenings!! So indulge me, please, as I count Sunday in this week of sewing.
I'm pretty excited about this top! I've seen lots of batwing tops like this. I was trying to decide which pattern to purchase when I realized that the Jamie Christina Hi Lo Raglan pattern had the silhouette I wanted, and it would be easy to adapt.
I've made this pattern three times already, and it fits great and is super comfy! The changes were super easy too.
First, I shortened the sleeves to about 3/4 length. Mostly I eyeballed it (because who wants to get and find the tape measure?). Then I cut a wide band for a cuff. The width is a matter of preference, but remember its folded over so make it double the width you want plus seam allowance.
Next I pretty much did the same with the hem. I cut both pieces even (not high/low hem). I chose a couple of inches below the front hem for my length. Again I cut a wide band for the hem. The bonus of this shirt- all the bands mean NO HEMS! I have issues with hemming knits, so I love it when I don't have to! (Both the bands at the cuffs and hem were cut slightly smaller than the width of the cuff/hem, and stretched to fit while sewing.)
How have I not mentioned the fabric?!? It's not very high quality, and kind of stiff, but how 80s can it get? Teal and coral? This really takes me back! I really love it!
I'm really pleased with how it turned out- have I mentioned that? I plan on ordering fabric for two more tomorrow!
