I love sewing and crafting for holidays, and 4th of July is one of my favorites! It's all about family, friends, food, and fun! I was on a roll with shorts so I wanted to make some that would work for the 4th. It's the new MADE Kids Shorts pattern again, of course. I love it!!
The day before my mom, the kids, and I went to Goodwill. I thought I'd like to find some men's shirts to use for B's shorts. In the men's shirt section I stumbled upon a way to entertain the kids. Green was the half price ticket, so I had them "scavenger hunt" for green tag shirts. They loved it! When I explained to B that I was looking for him, he began looking for green tag shirts with pockets, so his shorts could have pockets in the back. With the exception of the burgundy velour sweatshirt he loved ("it's so soft, mom!"), he picked some good stuff.
I started with a great linen blend shirt in a denim color with white lines, but got in a hurry and cut the back piece too high. The pocket would get sewn right into the waistband. Seriously?!? I'm saving the fixing of that for another day...
I instead moved on to the second shirt! B loved it because it had not one, but TWO pockets! Awesome! I paid more attention to cutting and positioned the pockets just right. He loves them! I made the regular shorts this time, not the bias tape style. Instead of 1" elastic, I stitched in the middle of the waistband to create 2 channels and inserted two pieces of 1/4" elastic.
For M's shorts I stuck with the bias tape style-- I love it and so does she! Again she picked the fabric, choosing from two different red and white polka dot prints. I love how these shorts work for her. They are long enough for school in the fall and very comfortable.
I'm really enjoying this pattern! Dana released the tutorial for the front pockets, so it's time to make more!!
Maybe now it's time to stop avoiding making shorts for myself? I have the Sewaholic Thurlow pattern just sitting here waiting...
